Wyevale Nurseries: A Legacy of Exceptional Horticulture

For more than 95 years, Wyevale Nurseries has stood as a premier grower of trees, hedging, forestry plants, and a variety of hardy species. Our legacy is built on innovation, quality, and a profound commitment to sustainability. As environmental challenges escalate, our resolve to cultivate resilient plants that enhance biodiversity, capture carbon, and promote long-term landscape health continues to strengthen.

Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability is integral to our operations. We consistently invest in eco-conscious growing techniques, water-efficient irrigation systems, peat-free composts, and integrated pest management. Our aim is to provide trees that not only flourish but also make a positive impact on the ecosystems they inhabit.

Drawing on its many years of horticultural knowledge, Wyevale Nurseries has honed a discerning eye for identifying exceptional trees. In response to the increasing challenges that native species face, particularly due to climate change and urban development, our team has meticulously curated the Original Select range.

The Original Select Range

These ‘Select’ cultivars of native trees have undergone extensive trials and have been specifically chosen by our tree production team. They are cultivated for their remarkable establishment, consistent appearance, and dependable success, with each tree showing significant improvements over their seedling counterparts.

Selection criteria includes tolerance of drought, compacted soils, fluctuating moisture levels, and elevated urban temperatures ultimately helping improve long-term establishment rates in challenging planting environments.

The Select range has further been developed to maximise ecosystem services including carbon sequestration, urban cooling, stormwater interception, air quality improvement, and wildlife habitat provision.

By maintaining the essential characteristics of their parent species, these cultivars are designed to guarantee successful establishment and enduring resilience of native trees in challenging environments, including urban areas and regions impacted by shifting climate conditions.

Furthermore, all Select cultivars are propagated and grown within the UK, supporting plant health security and reducing reliance on imported planting stock.

Betula pendula ‘Select’

Betula pendula ‘Select’ is an elegant variety of Silver Birch, selected for its upright, pyramidal shape and pristine pearl-white bark. It features a narrow canopy, generally less than 5 meters wide, allows for reduced conflict with buildings, making it ideal for urban settings and limited spaces. This tree is drought-resistant and thrives in poor soil conditions, creating a light, airy canopy that casts dappled shade. Cultivation practices ensure a balanced stem and strong central leader, making it a structurally reliable choice for streetscapes and formal landscapes.

Crataegus monogyna ‘Select’

From the original forms, we have chosen individual trees that exhibit vigorous growth while maintaining a uniform, upright structure and minimal thorns to create our ‘Select’ cultivar. Crataegus monogyna, commonly referred to as Common Hawthorn or May Tree, is a native deciduous species frequently utilized in hedgerows and naturalistic plantings. It produces a profusion of white flowers, which provide an excellent nectar source for bees and other pollinators. These are then followed by small red fruits in autumn that are highly attractive to birds. This species is exceptionally hardy and flourishes in a variety of soil types, including heavy clay. It responds well to hard pruning during dormancy, making it suitable for both informal and formal landscaping. Our unique ‘Select’ clones highlight the very best of these characteristics.

Prunus padus ‘Select’

A medium-sized Bird Cherry cultivar characterized by its upright growth and ascending branches, making it perfect for compact urban environments. It produces creamy white flowers in May that appeal to pollinators, which are later followed by small black berries. The ‘Select’ cultivar exhibits richer green foliage colour to typical seedlings contributing to a healthy vigorous appearance throughout the growing season. This deeper green enhances the chemical processes essential for carbon fixation. In the autumn, its leaves transition to a lovely buttery yellow. This cultivar has been specifically chosen for its ability to thrive in challenging conditions.

Quercus robur ‘Select’

Quercus robur ‘Select’ is a specially cultivated variety of English Oak, developed by Wyevale Nurseries for urban environments. Featuring a semi-upright, uniform crown, it is grafted onto seed-raised rootstock to guarantee consistency and vitality. This tree boasts lush green leaves and spring blossoms that attract a variety of pollinators, including the increasingly rare oak mining bee. It is ideally suited for open urban spaces, avenues, and structured planting designs where native species are preferred, even in challenging site conditions. Quercus robur select retains exceptional ecological value associated with native English oak supporting hundreds of invertebrate species while providing a more predictable urban form.

Tilia cordata ‘Select’

Tilia cordata ‘Select’ is a specially cultivated variety tailored for urban settings. It showcases a more upright canopy and glossy green leaves that withstand aphid honeydew. Selected for foliage characteristics that minimise nuisance honeydew deposition on parked vehicles and hard surfaces. Blooming in June, it produces small, fragrant flowers that attract bees and other pollinators, enhancing biodiversity in city landscapes. In the fall, the leaves transition to a warm amber hue. This cultivar is well-suited for open urban areas and structured avenues, providing a resilient and aesthetically pleasing native tree option.

At Wyevale Nurseries, our Original Select range exemplifies our dedication to cultivating resilient, native trees that not only beautify landscapes but also contribute to ecological health and biodiversity. Whether enhancing streetscapes, creating naturalistic plantings, or supporting wildlife, our carefully curated selection of trees offers reliable solutions for today’s environmental needs. As we look to the future, Wyevale Nurseries remains steadfast in our mission to grow quality plants that inspire and sustain the landscapes of tomorrow.
